How To Clean The Drain Pump on a Washing Machine
If you notice that your front load washer is having problems with water drainage, cycle times are taking longer than usual or the unit won’t spin properly, one of the reasons could be that there is a blockage in the system. Here is a step by step guide on what to do if you think this may be the issue.
-
Locate the drain pump filter on the front of the washer (sometimes they are covered by a panel that you will have to remove first. Usually they are either located on the bottom front of the machine or the back of the machine.
-
Some models don’t have easy access points and so may need a service call.
-
Place a bucket or something that can catch any draining water In front of the panel /drain hose.
-
Open panel and locate the filter.
-
If it has a drain hose, open the drain hose and drain that first.
-
Once water is drained, open the pump filter carefully so any water not drained can fall into the bucket.
-
Once removed clear the pump filter of any debris. If you notice anything in the pump, remove it immediately as this is what could be causing your washing machine to malfunction. This could be something that was left in a trouser pocket and put in the wash or something that ended up in the washing machine when it shouldn't have.
-
Finally, reconnect the drain pump and hose (if there is one) and shut the access door.
